10 Adult Rock Songs That No One Understood As Kids
6. Say It Ain't So - Weezer
There's almost a sense of childlike innocence when it comes to Say It Ain't So by Weezer. From the first time you hear that opening guitar line, it just feels like you're kicking back with friends jamming for the hell of it. That might be what you're supposed to think, until you actually get a load of the father in the song.
Written from the perspective of a child of divorce, Rivers Cuomo frames this entire song about being unable to confront his father's past demons in regards to alcoholism. Although the song itself is nonthreatening, it's almost like you're listening to a pre pubescent teenager half heartedly attempting to make amends with his father for the pain that he caused his family over the years. Once you get older though, that bridge section can hit a lot of raw nerves.
Being the moment where our hero fully freaks out, this is Rivers lashing out at his father for what he did, saying that he shouldn't really feel proud about how much he's cleaned up since he left his old family behind. All while dear old dad found Jesus, this son is drowning in sorrow, not wanting to relive this kind of scenario all over again with his stepfather. Yeah, suffice to say there's probably a lot more going on behind those nerdy glasses than you might want to confront.
