10 Adult Rock Songs That No One Understood As Kids
7. Every Breath You Take - The Police
Over the course of the Police's career, Sting's approach to love songs has been...let's say strange and leave it at that. Though there have been some straightforward declarations of love like Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, you can never really get past the fact that Roxanne is about a hooker once you hear it for the first time. If you have to go at it from that angle, don't be surprised when people latch onto some of the weirder aspects of your wordplay.
Just before they would fracture at the midpoint of the '80s, Sting wrote one of the most defining love songs of his generation in Every Breath You Take, which many argue speaks to the undying devotion one has to their partner. In theory that would be right, as long as you don't look past the obvious pseudo stalker tendencies going on in the verses.
As much as this can be considered a love song, you won't find love anywhere on the lyric sheet, instead just being Sting talking about how much he'll be watching the object of his infatuation at every waking moment. It's not even clear whether these people are even friends. For all we know, Sting could just be a creep eyeing this girl from the bushes. Nevertheless, the fact that this has been used to soundtrack first dances at weddings over the years prove that the darkness is lost on a lot more people than we realize.
