1. Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica
A patrician favourite of musicians and record collectors, the awful sounding genius of Trout Mask Replica is in a league of its own.
There's a reason why Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band were named so. Beefheart composed every song on the album on piano, despite not knowing how to play it. Likewise, it's full of time signatures and key changes that you just wouldn't find in the earwormy pop music of the day.
While live recordings and rarity collections of Trout Mask Replica songs exist, you cannot listen to the full studio album on streaming services. Perhaps keeping it off streaming retains its high market value, and legendary story. The 1969 album is meant to be unpredictable, so keeping it unavailable as opposed to Beefheart’s available deep cuts adds to its lustre.
Trout Mask Replica was released on Frank Zappa’s label, as opposed to Beefheart’s Buddha Records. So this may be another case of dull distribution rights, or it could be another joke Trout Mask Replica is pulling on us.
Also, that isn’t even a trout on the cover, it’s a carp!
