10 Albums Recorded In Bizarre Locations

5. Piramida - Efterklang

Danish post-rock band Efterklang (which translates to 'remembrance') formed in Copenhagen, 2000. Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer and Rasmus Stolberg comprise the group, with that roster routinely expanded to accommodate live performances. They have five well-received albums under their belt, with their fourth, 2012's Piramida, arguably the most striking.

For this set, the band ventured on an extended trip to the Arctic, in the far north of Norway, in the Svalbard archipelago, to the abandoned Russian mining town whose name forms the record's title. The inspiration of this stark and beautiful landscape resulted in some equally memorable music. Piramida was released to general acclaim, and sparked a global tour with full orchestra, with the group playing such legendary venues as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Sydney Opera House and The Barbican, in London.

The fabric of this remote location is intrinsically woven into Piramida. As the band themselves explain: “Mads, Casper and Rasmus traveled to Piramida in August 2011 and brought home a library of more than a 1000 field recordings that were used in the making of the songs on the album.”
