10 Albums That End On A Cliffhanger
6. Quadrophenia - The Who
During their '70s run, the Who practically wrote the mission statement of how rock operas were supposed to be made. Though you could make the case of concept albums happening well before Pete Townshend thought of it, the reason why something like Tommy holds up is because of how they were able to squeeze just as many narrative twists and turns onto the record as they did musical ones. That was just the proof of concept though...Quadrophenia is where it starts to really mess with your head.
Departing from Tommy entirely, this record tells the story of Jimmy, a down on his luck Mod kid looking to make sense of himself while trying to hold onto his cool credentials. As much as this record is a lot more scattered than Tommy's from a narrative perspective, everything comes to a close with Love Reign O'er Me, which acts as the final curtain call for Jimmy.
Venturing out to sea to find answers, this tour de force for Roger Daltrey shows him taking on the character of Jimmy, looking for some kind of respite from his life. We don't get a response though, as Jimmy is left on the rock in the middle of the ocean as the storm closes in around him. For all we know, he may have never even left that rock alive.
