10 Albums That The Critics Got Wrong
7. Discovery - Daft Punk
In any genre of music, there's usually that one critic that decides to go against the grain and call an all-time classic terrible. It might not be malicious either. Sometimes you just have to admit that the hype train that everyone else is riding is just not clicking with you in the same way. But when that person is a legend in the music industry, you sure as hell take notice.
When Daft Punk ended up putting out their dance classic Discovery, the harshest critic turned out to be Robert Christgau, the legendary music reviewer who wrote for Rolling Stone. While he certainly had some expertise in the industry, his indictment of this record sounds like he doesn't fully understand what he has on his hands here. For all of his gripes, most of the complaints come down to not liking the repetition of the songs.
I'm sorry....did this man just forget that he was listening to a DAFT PUNK record? The repetition is the whole point and helps you get sucked into the hypnotic feel of these songs. Even if some of the Auto-Tune may have aged a little poorly, this is one of the few mindless dance records that hasn't lost its luster even with 2 decades under its belt.
