10 Albums That Turned Out Nothing Like You Expected
5. Electra Heart—Marina and the Diamonds
There are few things stranger than an artist managing to move from Kate Bush comparisons to Kesha comparisons in the space of a single record.
Yet that's exactly what Welsh singer songwriter Marina managed with her second studio effort Electra Heart. The artist's debut album, The Family Jewels, was critically acclaimed for its odd fusion of singer-songwriter indie idiosyncrasy with more mainstream, if dark and ironic, pop elements.
Even the album's suggestive title hinted at its tone, a smirking middle finger to the mainstream.
Cut to the release of follow up Electra Heart, which saw her abandon the stripped back singer songwriter elements of her earlier work for some catchier, more pure and unadulterated pop. The wit was still there, it was just now sledgehammer subtle, as were the lush pop song arrangements and unabashedly mainstream radio hits.
The album won over a legion of fans for the artist now known as Marina, but many critics never returned to their former love of her music despite her lyrics remaining as sharp as ever beneath the catchier instrumentals.
