10 Albums That Turned Out Nothing Like You Expected
6. Congratulations—MGMT
An odd band through and through since their inception, indie rockers MGMT seemed as blindsided by the success of their album Oracular Spectacular as the rest of the world were.
Glam rock had enjoyed a brief, ironic revival via The Darkness in the early noughties, but this was far from Justin Hawkins' winking falsettos. Hits like Electric Feel and Kids saw MGMT briefly revive the more lush and anthemic elements of psychedelia and fuse them with modern pop rock.
Equal parts glib and sincere, the album left the world waiting for its follow up.
Of course, the band’s second album Congratulations was a massive departure from their debut’s glittery rock. A more muted prog rock effort, this 2010 release saw the band abandon the synth-y sound of their first hit for a darker, more guitar-led psychedelic rock album which was bereft of any radio-ready mainstream hits.
Since then, fans have come to expect all manner of weirdness from the band, but there was a time when the artists behind Brian Eno were almost mainstream hitmakers.
