10 Albums That Were Hated Before They Even Came Out

8. Some Time In New York City - John Lennon

The generation that got their hearts broken when the Beatles broke up really need to settle down when it comes to Yoko Ono. While her music might not necessarily for everybody, she was not to blame for the Fabs splitting apart, and without her there's a good chance that John Lennon wouldn't have been able to have such a great solo career later down the line. When the couple did collaborate on projects though, we were presented with more than just a mixed bag of tracks.

Even though Some Time In New York City has a great idea behind it in Lennon getting political, the idea of flip flopping between both John and Yoko songs across the track listing makes for one of the harshest listening experiences on a post Beatles album, with a great singalong like New York City being upended by a song like We're All Water, containing a second half of the song where Yoko carries on screaming like we all know her for these days. Just when you think that you're settling into the groove of the record, there are always those songs that either lay on the politics too thick or are too incoherent to take seriously.

And as harsh as it might sound, Yoko might have a few better songs than John does here, with Sisters O Sisters beating out songs like Attica State, which feel like Lennon treading the same water he did on Yer Blues from the White Album. That's before you get to the live disc, which has some of the most jarring avant garde songs that are hypnotic at best and ear grating at worst. John may have written countless songs about how we treat each other, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of overt politics.
