10 Albums That Were Supposed To Be Great (But Fell Apart)

8. Risk - Megadeth

From the minute that Megadeth was formed, it was almost like Dave Mustaine was determined to one-up Metallica in whatever way he knew how, whether it was faster riffs or complicated song arrangements. At the same time, you might want to be careful when following their pitfalls as well.

Though Metallica initially reached the rock masses with the Black Album, Megadeth's output post Youthanasia seemed intent on making a pop crossover like the thrash metal titans. Much like Load and Reload proved to be too much crossover for Metallica fans, Megadeth's Risk is the sound of Mustaine completely losing the plot of Megadeth. Whereas the idea of getting a pop producer in to beef up the hookiness of the material was intriguing, a lot of the results feel like they wouldn't have made the cut even on a mediocre thrash album in the '80s.

Comparing something like Crush Em or Breadline to Peace Sells is almost like apples and oranges, as Mustaine tries desperately to make his signature snarl fit within a pop context. Seeing how this was the final album before their eventual course correction on The World Needs a Hero, Risk remains one of the many risks that Mustaine should have probably left alone.
