10 Amazing '90s Bands That Everyone Forgot About

8. Blind Melon

Before the grunge wave came in and hit, the rock scene didn't really know what it wanted to be. Hair metal was clearly on the way out, but only the heavy hitter bands like Guns N Roses and Metallica were actually able to have staying power after the alternative revolution really kicked into gear. A few weeks shy of Kurt Cobain starting a mosh pit in a gymnasium though, Blind Melon brought rock back to something a lot more rootsy.

Though they tend to get lumped in with the first wave of alternative rock, Blind Melon's first album is a completely different beast from what grunge had to offer, almost acting like a jam band in the same area as acts like Phish. While they definitely had a freewheeling hippy aesthetic to their videos, there's a lot more going on on their debut album besides No Rain, from folksy ballads like Change to Tones of Home where they go full on funk rock on a track.

Outside of the studio though, Shannon Hoon was willing to embrace his rock star tendencies a lot more onstage, practically giving us the rock star that Mother Love Bone's Andy Wood should have been out of Seattle. The good times weren't meant to last for too long though, as Blind Melon would only last for one more record before Hoon passed away while on tour of a drug overdose. Even though the band continues on with a new singer these days, it's sad to see the potential they had with Shannon be snuffed out so quickly.
