10 Amazing '90s Bands That Everyone Forgot About
7. Semisonic
For all of the turmoil that came with grunge, the back half of the '90s actually started to get a lot more optimistic. Along with the Britpop movement kicking into high gear in the UK, America was also going through its own little pick me up era of rock music, with things shifting to a much more bubblegum flavor of rock and roll. The age of minivan rock was just around the corner, and Semisonic brought the pop back into rock music.
At least...for a little bit. For most fans of '90s rock, the story of this band pretty much begins and ends at songs like Closing Time or Secret Smile, both of which are prime examples of what they can do. Compared to the usual alternative scene getting more disaffected with themselves, this is the kind of power pop that Weezer helped usher in, with Dan Wilson earning his stripes as an amazing songwriter across albums like All About Chemistry or Feeling Strangely Fine.
Then again, you probably don't need to feel too bad about where Wilson ended up later down the road. After the band's popularity faded, Wilson has probably been on the radio a lot more than you realize, having a hand in writing different songs for the likes of the Chicks and Adele behind the scenes. The hits may have dried up for his main act, but if you know your way around a hook, you're going to always have the industry coming back to you.
