10 Amazing '90s Bands That Everyone Forgot About
5. Gin Blossoms
From the moment that the Seattle scene became the center of the rock universe, you could tell that no one was really expecting it. This was not a community that was supposed to see the big time, and from the way that Kurt Cobain behaved, this wasn't a man who was exactly thrilled to be considered the voice of his generation or anything. For all of the bands that tried to run away from the spotlight though, Gin Blossoms were never afraid of their poppier side.
Going through their back catalog like New Miserable Experience, these songs deserve to be featured in more than just '90s nights at the pub. While these songs are still clearly in the same vein as the alternative scene, there's a lot more tunefulness in their presentation, especially with pop hooks as unstoppable as Hey Jealousy or Found Out About You. Given their jangle pop sound, you can tell that these guys listened to a lot more R.E.M. and the Smiths than Sonic Youth and were content to just ride the waves wherever it took them.
For all of their optimistic music though, their story had a lot of darkness attached to it, from addiction to their frontman committing suicide midway through their rise to the top. They may have been a bit softer than their alternative counterparts, but there's nothing wrong with being able to write the kind of hook that can get under someone's skin.
