10 Amazing '90s Bands That Everyone Forgot About

6. Harvey Danger

During the mid '90s, it was clear that the alternative revolution that Nirvana had started wasn't really going to go the distance. With Kurt Cobain long since passed away, the focus in the rock scene started to shift away from depressing and started getting more optimistic, bratty, and more often than not a lot more stupid for its own good. Though we had alternative rock thriving well into the '00s, Harvey Danger may have been the last new band from Gen X's time in the sun.

While there were also acts like Live coming out around the same time, Harvey Danger occupied this weird space in the rock scene, being just the kind of nerdy band to play alongside Weezer but also snotty enough to cite a band like the Pixies as one of their main influences. Being content in the underground scene, the power behind their song Flagpole Sitta was too hooky to ignore, having the same kind of anthemic quality that made bands like Pearl Jam so undeniable back in the day.

Once they reached the top though, you could tell that these guys were a lot more comfortable in the underground scene, with singer Sean Nelson trying to balance out his time as a writer in between being the frontman. If anything, the legacy of Flagpole Sitta might be the greatest impact they had on the scene. While their music was great to rock out to, this was a statement for what Gen X had come to: completely drenched in irony to the point where they can't even take themselves seriously anymore.
