10 Amazing Artists With Terrible Debut Albums

6. Genesis - From Genesis To Revelation (1969)

From Genesis To Revelation is one of those albums that just doesn't quite sound right considering the later output and works of Genesis, as the group's first studio outing has the band playing with one ambition: to create hit singles.

Under the reins of producer Jonathan King, who wanted to name the future prog giants Gabriel's Angels, they produced an album of short pastiches in the style of the popular bands of the time such as the Bee Gees. The resulting compositions are so forgettable and feature none of what would become staples of the Genesis sound. Keyboard solos, odd time signatures, and otherworldly lyrics are nowhere to be found on From Genesis To Revelation, with average at best predictable pop songs in their place.

The album was recorded in just two days, and upon release was often placed in the religious section of record stores due to its title. The band were confident in the record and went out and bought suits just in case they were asked to be on Top Of The Pops. Sadly, the album sold just 649 copies and failed to chart on release in 1969.
