10 Amazing Artists With Terrible Debut Albums

5. Elton John - Empty Sky (1969)

Released in the same year as From Genesis To Revelation, Elton John's debut was the only Elton John album never to enter the UK charts, but did indeed show promise of a potential superstar. 1969's Empty Sky, although being a favourite of its creator, who was immensely proud of it at the time, was a huge commercial failure.

The first of many albums to feature Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin, Empty Sky's main issue was just down to the creative pair being yet to settle into a particular genre or style, with both parties yet to fall into their own style of music and lyrics respectively.

For a man who would create some of the catchiest melodies of all time, Empty Sky is incredibly light on hooks and memorable moments, leaving the album an unfortunately forgettable listen. Reviews at the time were unfavourable but did acknowledge the huge potential of the future Rocketman.

Thankfully for fans, however, after a dodgy first step, just one year later Elton would release his self-titled second album which contained the huge hit Your Song which made him a household name.
