10 Amazing Artists With Terrible Debut Albums
2. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984)
From all the way back in 1984, the self-titled debut of The Red Hot Chili Peppers is quite a shock to listen to for fans of their later output. With only two familiar faces on the album - vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea - the sound and style of the record is much heavier and less refined. Even Kiedis and Flea are yet to settle into and find their own respective sounds and styles on the debut.
Much of the shortcomings of the debut are down to producer Andy Gill, as the band and Gill did not get along. The Chilis were so disappointed with the album and its production that they actually preferred the earlier demos of the songs to the final product. Rhythmically, this '84 offering is also missing that signature groove the group are well known for, which would eventually be provided by drummer Chad Smith.
Upon release, the album received mixed reviews and, although it was released on major label EMI records, has sold just 300,000 copies to date; a figure far removed from their usual sales count in the millions which the band still enjoys to this day.
