10 Amazing Bouncebacks In Rock History
5. Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters
Nirvana were never really a group that was well-equipped for the mainstream. In fact, when their music started becoming the next defining sound of rock going forward, these guys from Seattle turned into a time bomb waiting to go off. Just when everyone was ready to follow these guys to the ends of the Earth, it all came to a sullen end when Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home by suicide.
For the rest of the band, it would have been totally understandable if they never wanted to pick up a guitar again. With no real set project to his name, Dave Grohl started travelling and made a few spare recordings of his own songs in Seattle just to pass the time. The more he got into the recording though, the more he realized that he might be able to make this project a fully-fledged band. Turning down a spot playing drums for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Grohl ended up taking the chance of a lifetime and forming the Foo Fighters after completing the demo.
And...thank god he did. From front to back, this record feels like the arrival of something brand new, as if Grohl is dusting himself off and trying to move on from the trauma that he went through. Even though a world without Kurt Cobain might sound very different, here was a record that picked us off our feet and kept things moving.
