10 Amazing Bouncebacks In Rock History

2. Dave Mustaine

It's no secret that the guys in Metallica liked to drink in the early days. From the first few sessions, alcohol ended up fueling these guys to play some of their early highlights like Seek and Destroy and Whiplash. Though you don't get the nickname ALCOHOLICA by accident, there is such a thing as being out of control even amongst a band of drunks.

As the thrash titans made their way to the East Coast to cut their first album, it was clear that guitarist Dave Mustaine was getting more and more erratic, oftentimes trashing people's houses along the way. While many would just blame it on the rock and roll lifestyle, the attitude clash led to Dave waking up in New York with a bus ticket back home. Even though that would be a crippling blow to your ego, Mustaine arrived back in San Francisco ready to build himself back up again.

Finding a confidante in David Ellefson, Mustaine became a riff-writing machine, determined to make a new group that was big enough to rival his former bandmates. The result was Megadeth, who has since become one of the greatest thrash metal acts in the world off the strength of albums like Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. Metallica might be the bigger band in the long run, but they do have some competition if they're not careful.
