10 Amazing Bouncebacks In Rock History
1. Rick Allen
Any band can get over a common stage injury. Even when people have broken bones onstage, you have seen plenty of professionals like Dave Grohl and James Hetfield still making the show go on when at half-capacity. Then again, it's a completely different story when you don't have a limb anymore.
As Def Leppard took a break from what would become their blockbuster album Hysteria, Rick Allen was driving through the countryside when his car flipped over into a field. Though Rick survived the crash, the same couldn't be said for his left arm, which was torn off when the car started to flip. With no chance of reconnecting his limb, it would become clear that Rick was never going to play the drums. However, time and patience made for the arrival of the ThunderGod.
Returning to the studio just a few weeks after being released from the hospital, Rick began practicing on a new electronic drum kit, which allowed him to trigger the hits he would normally play with his left hand on his left foot. Before anyone knew it, Rick was able to play drums and even improvise much better than he did when he had all of his limbs. After a roaring welcome at their homecoming gig at Donington, Rick finally developed the confidence to return to the fold once again. Even when fate was not working out in his favor, Allen proved that you didn't even need all your limbs to kick ass.
