10 Amazing Classic Rock Inspired Albums From The 21st Century

9. The Resistance - Muse

Love them of hate them, there's no arguing that Muse's musical direction is incredibly eclectic. From their more alternative leanings beginnings to their prog epics to their straight ahead rockers, there seems to be no genre off the table for this power trio to touch.

Though the band's 2009 album The Resistance owes a lot of its greatest moments to electronica, there's also an influence that goes back much further than the synthesizer age. Tracks like "United States of Eurasia" and "Uprising" boast brilliant layered vocal harmonies and instrumentation that feels almost classically orchestrated. Though many fans attribute this to Matt Bellamy's love of classical music, it's hard to not listen to some of these tracks and not think of Queen.

Even songs like "Guiding Light" has a guitar solo that is clearly from the Brian May school of fretboard grandiosity. Much like their influences, Muse use the rest of the album as an opportunity to make more experimental tracks like the piano concerto at the end of "I Belong To You" and the awe-inspiring ending symphony that splits up into 3 separate sections. It takes a certain amount of musical guts to take on something as daring as Queen's sound, but Muse showed they could pull it without breaking a sweat.
