10 Amazing Cover Songs You Need To Hear

8. Nouvelle Vague - Guns Of Brixton

Nouvelle Vague are a French cover band. It seems somewhat unfair to include a cover band here as taking an artist's song and making it their own is their bread-and-butter, surely a cover band would best suited to capturing the essence of a piece and putting a unique spin on it. As such Nouvelle Vague have a collection of songs that are great and would fit into any discussion of amazing covers, but it's their take on The Guns Of Brixton that truly amazes.

The original Guns Of Brixton, performed by The Clash and written by the band's bassist Paul Simonon, deals with the rising tensions in the Brixton area due to the perceived heavy-handedness of the police, poverty and general discontent. The song predates the infamous 1981 Brixton riots, and is seen as an artist accurately taking the temperature of the public. The Nouvelle Vague cover on the the other hand is a surreal, sinister, bossa nova take which doesn't presume to encapsulate the same feelings, but taken at face value for its style and technique is on par with the Clash original.
