10 Amazing Covers Albums In Rock And Roll Music
1. Garage Inc. - Metallica
In the wake of the Load/ReLoad era of Metallica, it looked like the thrash titans had really started to lose their way. First they had to cut off their hair, and now they were talking about potentially performing with an orchestra? Yeah, the rough and tumble band that used to tear your face off in the '80s seemed to be dead and gone...but they had another ace up their sleeve with Garage Inc.
Since Metallica were always known for playing cover songs back in the day, this collection is some of the most off the wall choices that they could have gone for, except performed through the trademark Metallica lens. While there are certain songs that fit right in their style like Black Sabbath's Sabbra Cadabra and It's Electric by Diamond Head, the experimental songs are the most interesting, like the barroom style swagger of Thin Lizzy's Whiskey in the Jar or when James Hetfield gets in touch with his dark side on the cover of Loverman by Nick Cave. And for all of the sellout claims that go on to this day, something like Mercyful Fate is a good indication of their metal roots, taking 5 different songs by the metal legends and throwing them all into one glorious 11 minute track.
Even though they didn't have to write that much material for this record, you really start to understand who Metallica are as musicians after listening to this album, always focused on delivering something heavy in whatever way they can. Metal doesn't have to come to an end the minute you get a haircut...it all comes from the darkness that you have in your soul while you play.
