4. Nirvana - In Utero

Disgruntled by his encroaching fame and status as a pop culture icon, Kurt Cobain's state of mind continued to deteriorate as the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' fuelled 'Nevermind' introduced a generation of kids that had been raised on hair metal to the fuzzy sound of Seattle.

Whilst testimony from his wife Courtney Love and many other confidants indicates that Cobain had once fawned over the idea of being famous and even wrote to major record labels asking to be signed, the band's follow up to their commercial success was a protest against all that label execs expected of them.

Parodying the strange world which they'd found themselves in with 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter' and being deliberately abrasive on 'Rape Me', 'Milk It' and several ear-piercing moments on 'Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flowing Through The Strip', it doesn't make Cobain's last album before he took his own life any less of a spectacular listen.

'All Apologies', 'Pennyroyal Tea', 'Heart Shaped Box' and 'Dumb' are a mere few of the album's litany of great moments and Kurt's nuanced but somehow deeply relatable songwriting continues to strike a chord with those that choose to drop the needle on this record.
