10 Amazing Follow Ups To Classic Albums

7. Room On Fire - The Strokes

When you have a stellar debut album, it tends to feel like being thrown into the deep end of the pool without any help. Regardless of what you do next, it's hard to really pinpoint where to go without sounding derivative of what you did before. And yet for the Strokes, their second step up to bat with Room on Fire might be able to even eclipse Is This It.

Getting much more aggressive with age, The Strokes managed to strike a unique balance between the garage rock of their debut while sprinkling in bits and pieces of other genres. As much as Is This It is perfect in its own unique way, where the hell would you fit something like 12:51 onto the track listing? Or even something like Under Control, which has the same chord progression as an old school '50s pop song.

Hell, even the more low lights of the record like the Way It Is and Meet Me in the Bathroom still keep that garage-y ethos alive, with killer hooks and a lofi production that makes the whole thing sound like your speakers are about to explode whenever you play them. Even though First Impressions of Earth brought everything to a halt just a few years later, this kind of magic was good while it lasted, right?
