10 Amazing Follow Ups To Masterpiece Albums
5. In Utero - Nirvana
Not everyone is really equipped to be famous all at once. Even for some of the biggest stars in the world, it took a little while for them to actually get used to the idea of fame and become the musical heroes that their fans wanted them to be. Kurt Cobain was never aiming to be a hero though, and once people started calling him the Voice of His Generation, he began to run as far away from that label as he possibly could.
From the minute that Nevermind was released and Smells Like Teen Spirit set the world on fire, Kurt was determined to bury the sound of what he had already done, convinced that some of his best songs sounded way too slick for his taste. Going into the studio with punk rock producer Steve Albini, In Utero stands as a violent reaction to what Nevermind started, as Kurt took all of his pain and insecurities and channeled that energy into songs, like the ramshackle sounds of Scentless Apprentice or the tired ballads like Dumb and All Apologies.
The only sad factor behind this album though is knowing that Kurt never really found peace after this album, only living for a few months after its release before committing suicide and bringing the grunge revolution to an abrupt end. For all of its ugly moments though, In Utero is still Kurt through and through: an absolutely beautiful soul in spots but too artistically honest to hold anything back.
