10 Amazing Hard Rock Music Videos
6. Jeremy - Pearl Jam
People tend to forget just how dark the grunge scene was in its prime. The flannel shirts and pawn shop guitars may have been a welcome change of pace from the hair metal movement, but a lot of these songs were far more morose than anything else on the charts. Many bands had breathtaking visuals for these songs, but none hit on a nerve quite like "Jeremy."
As opposed to the more introspective tracks on Pearl Jam's debut record, this song was a grim tale about a real kid who committed suicide in front of his classmates. Knowing the power behind the song's message, the band did not hold back when it came time to film, with intense shots of the titular Jeremy stirring around in his own head. He seems like a mild-mannered little kid, but the tone quickly shifts into dark territory as we enter the classroom.
While Eddie Vedder soulfully croons underneath it all, we see Jeremy go up to the front of the room, brandish a gun, and stick it in his mouth, with the video ending on the frightened looks of his classmates as they sit in shock. The negative backlash eventually forced Pearl Jam to stop making videos entirely, but this work of art will forever be a landmark in rock history.
