9. The Devil You Know - Heaven and Hell

The entire fallout of Black Sabbath's original lineup seemed like it was beyond repair during the mid '80s. Something different was in the air during the '00s though, and the latest tour with Ozzy back behind the mic made those few years seem like water under the bridge. Nothing could happen in the studio because of Ozzy's solo career though, and it was about time for the second golden age of Sabbath to come back.

Although they might not have been able to use the Black Sabbath moniker on the record sleeve, the Devil You Know is a welcome comeback from the Ronnie James Dio era of the band, with some of the most menacing guitar riffs to come out of Tony Iommi in years. Listening to songs like Bible Black, you can hear them picking up right where they had left off on Mob Rules back in the day, constantly toeing the line between the doom metal that Sabbath had already trademarked and the kind of classic style that hinted at something like thrash back in the early '80s.

For all of the hangups that would come with Sabbath's eventual retirement, this is one of the last times where it feels like the camaraderie is there again, with Dio bringing Vinny Appice behind the drum kit to deliver a much more powerful stomp than what Bill Ward was capable of in Sabbath. 13 is the note that everyone knows Sabbath went out on, but The Devil You Know is the one that's probably going to hold up over time a lot better.
