5. Traveling Wilburys - Traveling Wilburys
After George Harrison started to hit a slump in the '80s with the record company breathing down his neck, you would understand if he never wanted to make new music ever again. When he started to work with ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne on Cloud 9 though, things started to turn a corner, with songs that were a lot more energized than anything he'd done since the '70s. He still needed a few B-sides for the project though, and one chance meeting turned into one of the best supergroups ever.
Though George could be considered the mastermind behind the Traveling Wilburys, the band's debut record brings everything they can to the table, with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison all pitching in tunes alongside Jeff and George. While there are some points where you can tell the band are just mining old rockabilly tricks like on Rattled, the majority of the record deserves a place alongside classics by any of these musicians, from the round robin style of Handle With Care to Roy's showcase Not Alone Anymore with his beautiful falsetto.
This might have been the last thing on most people's minds during the era of Guns N Roses and Madonna, but the Wilburys were almost too good to pass up, bringing together the middle aged rock stars back for one more go around. Trends can change all they want as far as the Wilburys are concerned, but there's nothing you can take away from the joy of getting into a room and jamming with your friends.
