10 Amazing Musicians Everyone Forgets About In Legendary Bands

1. Richard Wright - Pink Floyd

The tale of Pink Floyd has always been defined by the dueling sides of David Gilmour and Roger Waters. While Syd Barrett may have been the clear leader in the early days, David and Roger's partnership helped steer the band into unchartered territory and gave us one of the most impressive runs of albums in rock history, from the madness of Dark Side of the Moon to the melodrama behind the Wall. Floyd was never supposed to be their band though, and Richard Wright really got the raw end of the deal half the time.

Being a student of music for most of his life, Richard always brought a certain moodiness to every Floyd record, playing into the psychedelic soundscapes before signaling where they would be going in the future from the first discordant keyboard sections on Echoes. Once the band started to hit their stride though, it was always Richard who catered to the outlandish ideas of the band, like the jazz chords on Breathe or the otherworldly notes that happen in the verses of Us and Them.

Even though he was sacked and then rehired during the making of the Wall, Richard always had a keen ear for what the song needed, making different textures on songs like Comfortably Numb and helping play into the tension present on every single track. Roger may have helped to set the scene half the time, but for every single record he made with Floyd, Richard Wright served the song and created a different world every time his hands hit the keys.
