10 Amazing Musicians Everyone Forgets About In Legendary Bands

5. Joe Hahn - Linkin Park

Of all the hangups that come with the nu metal genre, time has always been very cruel to the man behind the turntables. Even though the idea of mixing the hip hop elements with rock may have been novel at the time, the amount of DJs in these outfits have always been really hit or miss, always treading the line between electronic and cringy scratch work thrown in the song out of nowhere. Joe Hahn always was a musician first, and what he did with Linkin Park has held up a lot better than any other "samplist" of the time.

From the first time you heard the soundscapes on Hybrid Theory, Joe was much more in tune with what kind of intensity the band needed, almost sounding closer to film scoring half the time than outright sampling. When you hear some of the more intense electronic moments on a song like In the End, the stuttering beats almost feel dystopian in a way, giving you the impression that things are really breaking down half the time.

That's before you even get to the man's standalone scratch tracks, with Session being able to conjure up just as much lonely emotion as a song like Breaking the Habit. As the rest of the nu metal movement started to spiral out of control by the end of the Bush administration, Joe Hahn may be the reason why Linkin Park were able to remain relevant more than a decade after their debut.
