10 Amazing Musicians Everyone Forgets About In Legendary Bands

6. Krist Novoselic - Nirvana

It's always a bit of a balancing act whenever you find yourself in a trio. Even if there is one guy who seems to do a majority of the work, you always have to hold up more or less equal weight whenever you hit the stage or the entire thing is bound to collapse. When you have two living legends standing on either side of you though, people tend to take you for granted half the time.

Since Kurt Cobain has become a grunge icon and Dave Grohl has carved out his own niche with Foo Fighters, Krist Novoselic doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves as Nirvana's bassist, having a great understanding of Kurt's melodies throughout every version of the band. Compared to the dissonant punk sound that the band were toying with at the very beginning of their career, Krist kept that kind of gutteral bass tone throughout their pop years as well, playing with the melody on songs like Lithium and providing the pulse behind the song Polly where the drums would normally be.

Aside from his good time stoner spirit whenever he was found at award shows, some of the bass tones he got were borderline metal in some places, like playing full chords on Heart Shaped Box and eventually giving that same haunting vibe to I Should Have Known with the Foo Fighters. Kurt had originally been concerned that the stuff on Nevermind was going to sound too poppy, but he didn't need to worry about a thing since he had this kind of nastiness underneath it all.
