10 Amazing Noughties Albums No One Ever Talks About

4. Auf der Maur - Self Titled

Sometime in early 2004, you couldn't turn to any alternative music channel or radio station without seeing or hearing lead single 'Followed The Waves' from Auf Der Maur's self titled debut. Auf Der Maur is a hard rock record which was met with moderate commercial success, but many critics complained that the album was unoriginal and even dull. Some reviewers were sadly also more interested in the fact that former Hole bandmate Courtney Love was releasing her debut album, America's Sweetheart, around the same time. They never got their big chart battle showdown. Auf der Maur is not a startlingly original album by any stretch of imagination, but it doesn't deserve the labels 'cliche' or 'uninspired'. The quality is consistent throughout, with little filler or repetitiveness, and Auf der Maur's voice, sweet and sultry in equal measures, is a perfect contrast to the brutality of the music. The only real weakness of this album is its lyrics, but the songs' concepts are interesting, which more than makes up for it. Best Tracks: Followed The Waves, Would If I Could, Skin Receiver
