10 Amazing Rock Albums That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
7. Iowa - Slipknot
It would be putting it extremely mildly if you thought that the music of Slipknot was a little unhinged in the early days. From the second that the band jumped on that stage when they first played Ozzfest, it felt like these 9 maniacs were about to cause some sort of riot and leave you with a few scars in the process. So naturally when you've turned the dial to 11 the first time around, the Knot were looking to break the dial off its hinges as they went in to create Iowa.
Being encouraged to go even darker by producer Ross Robinson, this really feels like the band are taking all of their negative energy out on these songs, getting more and more cynical about the world on tracks like Left Behind and People = Sh*t. While there's a lot of showmanship with this music, the hate is frighteningly real, with Paul Gray and Corey Taylor admitting to being out of their minds on drugs throughout the making of most of this record.
As much as the fans may have loved the new sound at the time, the rest of the band have not really looked back that fondly on this era either, with no one getting along and barely speaking to each other after the final sessions wrapped up. Think about that for a second. Here is a record that was so heavy that it made the members of Slipknot not want to go back to it. That's some next level darkness.
