10 Amazing Rock Albums That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs

5. White Pony - Deftones

In the era of nu metal, there was always a 50/50 chance whether the album was actually going to hold up. Though it all made sense at the time, there's definitely a dividing line these days that separates the Linkin Parks of the world from the Stainds. While Deftones definitely fits on the quality side of the spectrum, White Pony definitely had them burning the candle at both ends a lot of the time.

Around the time that they hooked up with Terry Date, most of the early sessions for the album came to a halt, with members of the band looking to do nothing but play video games and get stoned out of their minds. As the sessions went on though, Chino Moreno found a way to harness that darkness that he was feeling, looking to write less about himself and making up characters in his own mind, like scripting out dialogue before going into write songs like Digital Bath.

You can also see the darker side of the band's lifestyle coming into view the further you listen on the album, with Knife Party being a snapshot of them playing with the weapons on tour and singing about their love of substances on something like RX Queen. If your most user friendly song on the album is something like Back to School, you're not necessarily in for the easiest of rides when you listen to the rest of the record.
