10 Amazing Rock Albums That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs

3. Dirt - Alice in Chains

It's no secret that a lot of musicians in the grunge scene were strung out on drugs a lot of the time. While Kurt Cobain's defense of his heroin use was to stop his constant stomach problems, there were definitely those kids looking to get hooked on the stuff to just get away from their depressing reality up in Seattle. Amid all of the excess though, Alice in Chains turned their focus inward on Dirt.

While not every song on this album is necessarily about addiction, you can hear Layne Staley struggling to come to grips with his vices on every track. Starting off with returning to bones on the opening track Them Bones, the entire record almost gives you the feeling of putting that spike into your veins, almost sounding like you're trying to walk through a swamp as you're listening to it.

When you're actually able to make out what Staley is singing though, it's a lot more revealing than anyone else in the rock scene, almost like you're getting a glimpse into the diary of an addict trying to do everything he can to stop their pain. That plea for help never came though, as Layne went further and further down the rabbit hole until he eventually died of an overdose while Alice was on hiatus. That's really the biggest crime of this album. As much great art came out of that pain, was it really worth it if it meant losing Layne in the process?
