10 Amazing Rock Albums We Never Got To Hear

8. Pearl Jam's Political Concept Album

After the 9/11 attacks and President Bush declaring war on Iraq, many musicians had a lot of things to say. Never ones to lay low, Pearl Jam had initially gotten their anger of the newly appointed president out on Riot Act, only to have it fall on deaf ears across half the country. Though the self-titled "avacado" album is seen today as a return to reform, the pieces of one of the grunge icons' most daring ventures are still accounted for.

Reflecting on the concept of life and death, most of the songs on here seem to be coming from the perspective of the same person. That's because they basically are, with Eddie Vedder originally having an idea of a man serving in the military fighting a war that he doesn't wish to fight. On paper, this sounds glorious from the start, given that Vedder was such a fan of rock opera visionaries the Who and had even written a proto rock opera himself at the beginning stages of Pearl Jam with Mamasun.

After losing some friends though, Pearl Jam started to backpeddle their initial idea, instead going for something that was a lot more punchy. The pointed subject matter hadn't gone anywhere though, with World Wide Suicide and Inside Job still holding the same dramatic heft that they would have in the actual album context. There's a way to frankenstein this album into something conceptual, but maybe it's best to keep it like it is.
