10 Amazing Rock Albums With Terrible Production
9. California - Blink 182
Thanks to the new technology of today, most of us don't need to worry about the problems that people encountered in the vinyl era. Since we now have as many tracks as we want to, we don't have to worry about fitting only a few things into the mix. When you have that much power though, it's only a matter of time before it comes back to bite you in the ass.
Though most of the die hard Blink 182 fans blame California's reception on Tom DeLonge leaving the band, the real blame here should really be in the hands of John Feldmann, the producer of the record. It's not like this guy doesn't know his way around the studio either, having had a hand in making great records for bands like All Time Low. Once he became part of the Blink camp though, it felt like every single identifiable quality of their sound got neutered in the process.
Blink was never known as a hardcore punk band or anything, but hearing the layers upon layers of synths and guitar overdubs just make them sound like any other band that has worked with Feldmann in the past. While many producers would kill to have a signature touch to their production, Blink ended up sounding more like themselves on Neighborhoods than on here.
