10 Amazing Rock Albums With Terrible Production
8. Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
Years before he was known as the Boss, Bruce Springsteen always had the tag of being a second rate Bob Dylan following him around. It's not hard to see why either, considering that Springsteen is also one to make detailed stories in his songs and speak to his audience in a completely natural way. If you decide to take cues from Dylan, it didn't necessarily have to be his production styles.
Considering this was a guy who made the colossal sound of Born to Run, Nebraska's production feels like it's missing something. For most of these songs, Springsteen is very rough around the edges with his vocals and the guitar sometimes sounds like it's out of tune on the record. With the E Street Band nowhere to be seen, there's also a sonic sheen that's stripped away from these songs.
These weren't tracks that were meant to be big hits though. In fact, most of these tracks weren't even made in a proper studio environment, with a lot of them being recorded by the Boss in his bedroom as demos. Out of all of the operatic sounding rock songs that Bruce has made in his prime, this is one of the few albums that actually benefits from having the sloppy production. If all of the songs are about people at their wits' end, it's only natural to have the singer feeling a little weary as well.
