10 Amazing Rock Albums With Terrible Production
2. Damaged - Black Flag
Punk rock albums aren't necessarily known to have some amazing sounds on them. If you were to listen to something from the likes of Bad Religion or Minor Threat, you can tell that they're not really trying to be the next Emerson, Lake and Palmer or anything. Even with the low bar that you have to clear for punk rock production though, Black Flag's first album is next level bad for audiophiles.
Then again, you can almost give the band the benefit of the doubt here. From the stories behind this album, these guys had nothing else to work with at the time, with the only option to have the songs sound like they were recorded in a trash can. From the first few bars of singing, you can also barely make out any of the words that Henry Rollins is saying.
This is the one instance though where the bad production works in the album's favor, giving the songs a certain charm, especially when they have the frat bro like chant alongs on a song like TV Party. Yes, they know that this is nowhere near professional recording, but they're going to have fun with it anyway. And let's be real...this was the album intended to be every parent's worst nightmare for a kid to bring home. It sounds absolutely horrid, too? All the better.
