10 Amazing Rock Bands That Almost Had The Wrong Members
1. Daryl Hall - Van Halen
The announcement of David Lee Roth's departure from Van Halen should have been a proven death blow to the band. Even though Roth wasn't necessarily the greatest singer in the world, the kind of charisma that he brought to the stage was going to be difficult for anyone to beat, let alone a relatively unknown singer. While Eddie Van Halen finally got a helpful tip from his mechanic to bring in Sammy Hagar, the next phase of the group was dangerously close to being a lot more soulful.
Along with thoughts of working with Joe Cocker at the time, Eddie actually had his sights on Daryl Hall, who was already riding the momentum of working in Hall and Oates at the time. Before people start scratching their heads though, you can kind of see what Eddie was going for if you look at what was to come on 5150.
As much as some of the songs fit squarely in the category of rock, the guitar was starting to get replaced with keyboards on some of the songs, which had been Daryl's instrument of choice whenever he played in his main gig. Then again, this is probably one of the times where history worked itself out correctly. Otherwise, we would have had the next version of Van Halen that would have sounded like Led Zeppelin trying to be the Temptations.
