10 Amazing Rock Bands That Almost Had The Wrong Members

6. Kerry King - Megadeth

When you bring up the millions of what-if's in music, you're more than likely going to get people talking about the possibility of Dave Mustaine staying in Metallica. Although everyone in the band had their demons when it comes to alcohol, Dave just seemed to take it that one step too far and managed to drink his way out of the band. The bounceback with Megadeth must have been sweet, but he could have had an equally iconic guitarist right by his side.

For as many proficient players that have come and gone in Megadeth's guitarist slot, the first one to occupy it was actually Kerry King of Slayer. This was around the time that Mustaine was first picking up the pieces, and Slayer was already making a name for themselves in the thrash scene at the time. As much as King said that he enjoyed playing Megadeth's first handful of shows, he never really had an intention of staying for too long, looking to go back to the balls to the wall energy of what he already had going on with Jeff Hanneman.

The split ultimately ended up contributing to an ongoing feud between Slayer and Megadeth, with Dave having to go through even more guitar heroes like Chris Poland through the '80s. Things may not have been on the best of terms by the end, but if that trade meant getting Marty Friedman in the band for a little while, it's not like Dave was losing sleep over it or anything.
