10 Amazing Rock Bands That Almost Had The Wrong Members
4. Keith Moon - Led Zeppelin
It was going to take more than a little bit of sweet talking to get Keith Moon out of the Who. Since the man is commonly regarded as one of the greatest drummers to ever pick up two sticks, Pete Townshend definitely wasn't going to leave behind his animal behind the drum kit. When Moon ended up talking with John Paul Jones though, his smackdown led to something a lot more interesting.
Around the time that the Who were going down the experimental rabbit hole on albums like the Who Sell Out, Jonesy actually asked Moon if he would be interested in jumping ship to form a new band that he was starting with Jimmy Page. Considering the band were on the verge of dramatic rock operas like Tommy, Moon wasn't willing to let that go, saying that the idea of them playing together would have gone over like a lead balloon.
Without even knowing it, Moon had just given this new project its name, with Led Zeppelin rising to prominence soon afterward after going for a few months as the New Yardbirds. Zeppelin weren't necessarily hurting behind the kit either, drafting in John Bonham and having something even more thunderous behind some of their riffs. As it turns out, the main solution to not getting an animal behind the drum kit is to just find another animal.
