10 Amazing Rock Songs Not Sung By The Lead Singer

8. Thought I Knew - Weezer

After the sessions for Make Believe stalled out, Weezer were in dire need of some course correction. While the last album gave them some great singles like Beverly Hills and Perfect Situation, their fanbase were pretty divided on the change in direction and thought that Rivers Cuomo had started to run out of ideas as a songwriter. You couldn't say they were short on ideas on the Red Album though...they just didn't have Rivers singing on them.

In one of the boldest moves that Weezer could have taken at this point, almost the entire back half of this record shows Rivers taking a back seat to the rest of the band, with every other member stepping up to the mic and performing songs of their own. And while Scott Shriner does a fine job on Cold Dark World and Patrick Wilson holds his own on Automatic, Brian Bell feels like he's in his element on Thought I Knew, which he had previously considered for his side band the Relationship.

It fits surprisingly well as a Weezer track though, having a lot more pep in its delivery, especially given the subject matter at play here. Although most of the song is about kicking a cheating ex to the curb, the bounce in the rhythm (courtesy of Rivers behind the kit) gives it a bit more sass than you would expect out of these nerd rockers. Compared to what Weezer was known for in the days of the Blue Album, this is the kind of breezy power pop that the last few years had been missing.
