10 Amazing Rock Songs That Artists Hated Recording
4. Maxwell's Silver Hammer - The Beatles
Of all of the Beatles' songwriters, Paul McCartney's was always the most whimsical of the group. Though John Lennon also was known to get into some surreal images and shenanigans during the era of Sgt. Pepper, Paul's never ending optimistic attitude is what drove some of the band's greatest songs to the top of the charts. There is a fine line between being peppy and becoming grating, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer is where the rest of the Beatles started to draw the line.
Being more in the vein of a children's song than anything else on Abbey Road, this really macabre story of a killer wielding a hammer was a chore to get through according to the rest of the group. When the Beatles had started their split, both John and Ringo pointed out that they didn't care for the song, saying that they had to play it time and time again just so Paul could get the take that he thought suited the song.
While George Harrison was a bit more diplomatic about his feelings towards the song, he made it clear that he wasn't exactly a fan, saying that it was a song that people are either going to find catchy or really annoying. This might be a nice little carefree song, but there's only so many times that you can play it before never wanting to play music ever again.
