10 Amazing Rock Songs That Artists Hated Recording

5. Something in the Way - Nirvana

For an album that has gone down in history like Nevermind, the entire production schedule went by extremely fast. When Nirvana first ducked into the famous Sound City Studios, it only took a little over 2 weeks to get the final versions of what became classics of the grunge movement. Though something like In Bloom and Smells Like Teen Spirit may have been knocked out in just a few takes, Something in the Way turned into a chore to get exactly right.

Being a far more delicate song than every other track on the record, Kurt Cobain wanted everything to be very subdued and quiet, which was not working when they got onto the studio floor. Out of frustration, Kurt sat on the couch and told producer Butch Vig how it should sound, with him playing the guitar and almost whispering the words.

Thinking that they were on the verge of a take, Vig decided to just record the song as is, quickly hooking up a mic and turning off all of the white noise in the room so that they could capture the raw performance. Though they had the makings of the song now, it became a bigger problem when the rest of the band comes in, with Dave Grohl instructed to play the drums as quiet as possible and the added cellist having problems tuning to Kurt's funky 5-string acoustic guitar. The song might not be the most pristine recording on the record, but that's exactly where the eeriness comes from.
