10 Amazing Rock Songs That Got Banned
7. You Don't Know How It Feels - Tom Petty
If you looked at the kind of music Tom Petty plays, he would probably be one of the last people to have to be censored for any reason. This was the kind of laid back music that you could lounge to while driving down a highway with the wind in your hair, so how does that translate to being from the dangerous side of the tracks? As Petty enters his elderstatesmen phase though, radio stations had problems with a single word that he put into one of his biggest hits.
Despite the laid back sounds of You Don't Know How It Feels, the line in the chorus about rolling another joint before heading down the road was not going to fly on radio, with the stations not being able to market a song that advocated for marijuana use. Even though the whole thing was confusing to Petty at the moment, he used a little bit of backwards logic to help get his point across.
Instead of just recording a censored version of the song, Petty and his team thought it would be a good idea to keep the song as it was, but flipping the tape right at that second he said the word to make the whole thing sound like gibberish. So whenever you heard You Don't Know How It Feels on the radio at the time, what you're hearing in that weird gap is the sound of the word 'joint' being played backward. Then again, it's really saying something about the state of radio when even one of the kings of dad rock is getting into trouble.
