10 Amazing Rock Songs With No Lyrics

3. Stream Of Consciousness - Dream Theater

Honestly, an 11:16 song is one of Dream Theater's shorter efforts.

World leaders in making things very loud and very long, Dream Theater have been producing prog metal goodness since the mid-'80s, really starting to make an impact on the mainstream towards the end of the 2000s. Their elongated songs and fantastical themes have earned them legions of fans worldwide and they are not adverse to the odd instrumental every now and then. Stream of Consciousness is one of them, taken from their 2003 album Train of Thought.

Described by drummer Mike Portnoy as "balls to the wall", Train of Thought was intended to be a heavier album than usual. Stream of Consciousness won't break any windows, but it still packs an almighty punch. Traversing several movements, the song is actually far more organised than its name would suggest, showing off the band's tightknit playing style and astonishing ear for musical cohesion.

Also, how's this for some trivia? The band wanted to know what an outsider would make of their creative process, and so challenged fans to write this song using just arrangement charts and MIDI layouts.
