10 Amazing Rock Songs With No Lyrics

2. Cliffs Of Dover - Eric Johnson

Any opportunity to talk about Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, one of the greatest video games ever made, can and should be taken.

That game, which had an absolutely stacked soundtrack, helped introduce a lot of modern music fans to the work of Eric Johnson; more specifically his 1990 piece Cliffs of Dover.

Johnson is a quintessential musician's musician; a well-respected industry figure who's never quite had the external recognition he deserves. He's played for legends like Cat Stevens, Carole King, and Christopher Cross, but most people will know him through this one song.

Cliffs of Dover, which won a Grammy in 1992, is the bounciest instrumental you will ever hear. Its strict use of a 4/4 time signature actually aids it rather than restricts it, as the song never strays from its dancey roots.

For a song with no outwardly human presence to attach yourself to, it's surprisingly easy to fall in love with Cliffs of Dover. Johnson's playing style is so airtight that it's like hearing a singer strike every note perfectly, and you'll find it difficult not to make your own words up in your head as you hear it.
