10 Amazing Songs That Don't Have A Chorus

8. The End - The Doors

From the first time they got in a room to jam, The Doors weren't looking to be your average rock band to come from the Flower Generation. There was a lot more going on in the world than the hippy movement, and the darker side of society was a lot more interesting to Jim Morrison, whether that meant bluesy stuff like Back Door Man or tapping into something a bit spooky on a song like End of the Night. The power of The Doors couldn't be contained in a pop song though, and the last song on their debut packed more of a punch than most fans were ready for.

Going over 11 minutes, the End basically amounts to an instrumental jam, taking cues from raga rock by staying in one key for a majority of the song, with the only lyrical hook being Jim saying goodbye to his lover at the end of a breakup. Once we get out of the pop song portion of the song though, Jim had free reign to do whatever he wanted, and the Lizard King's powers first came out when he took the mic past the first 3 minutes.

Spewing out pieces of poetry that he had worked out, what unfolds is a very spur of the moment kind of performance, from Jim talking about a killer awakening before dawn to ending the whole thing by pulling pages from Oedipus Rex, as he threatens to kill his father and fornicate with his mother. This is the kind of nastiness that horrified fans across the world and would eventually get the band kicked out of The Whisky for good. Then again, being so provocative that the straight media want to ban your free expression might be just the kind of endorsement that Jim was going for at the time.
